Waking up Dahlias

🌼 Taking Dahlias Out of Hibernation: A Step-by-Step Guide 🌼

After a long winter nap, it’s time to gently wake your dahlias and prepare them for a vibrant new season. Here’s how I bring mine back from hibernation to full bloom glory:

Steps to Wake Up Your Dahlias:

1. Find Your Tubers
Locate where you stored your dahlia tubers — cool, dark, and dry is best for winter storage.

2. Inspect and Trim
Check for any signs of rot or shriveling. Trim off any soft spots or damaged roots with clean scissors.

3. Pre-Sprout Indoors (Optional)
Place tubers in a shallow tray with some moist peat moss or paper towels. Keep them in a warm spot (around 70°F) to encourage sprouting.

4. Prepare the Soil
While your dahlias are waking up, prepare your garden bed or pots with rich, well-draining soil amended with compost.

5. Plant After the Last Frost
Once danger of frost has passed and soil is warm (at least 60°F), plant your tubers about 4–6 inches deep with the “eye” or growth point facing up.

6. Water Lightly at First
Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Too much water too early can cause rot.

7. Support Early Growth
As shoots emerge, provide stakes or supports to protect your dahlias from wind.

Bonus Tips:

  • Start feeding with a balanced fertilizer once growth begins.
  • Watch for pests as new growth appears.
  • Enjoy the anticipation — dahlias reward patience with spectacular blooms!
